Vignettes is a delightful work for Bassoon and String Quartet. Refreshing and evocative, Vignettes creates three distinct moods as it explores solo bassoon in relationship to the texture and color of the strings.

The first movement, “Hopespun” is joyous and accessible, celebrating a dotted note pattern both dancelike and carefree. The second movment, “Somewhere, Tears” is lyrical and reflective, characterized by a poignant descending melody that moves throughout the ensemble. “Infinite Imagines,” the third movment, is playful and imaginative, with a curious pizzicato theme that weaves its way through a series of short whole-tone scale patterns that are interrupted by comedic melodic bursts from the bassoon.

Forest and Fen, for Woodwind Quintet, is one of four movements in a series titled Wanderings, that walks us through different environs in the natural world. It seeks to capture the wonder of the imagination when exploring the natural world, and celebrates the whimsy, delight, humor, and calming transcendence of our planet’s sublime beauty. The piece is an invitation to enter woods and wetlands with the fresh eyes of a child. Laid out in an ABA format, the first and last sections are characterized by a buoyant, adventurous ascending dotted-note theme tossed back and forth between instruments. The contrasting middle section is characterized by a lyrical calm.

Winner of the 2021 Renee B. Fisher Composition, Web and Wings was the featured solo piece for the 2021 Renee B. Fisher Solo Piano Competition. (Elementary/Secondary division) Both lyric and dynamic, it is a playful and imaginative contemporary competition piece composed by an award-winning female composer. The work is challenging and fun to play with lots of textural variety. It provides excellent opportunities for working on a broad range of keyboard techniques including trills and arpeggios, mastering inner-voice phrasing, and practicing moving between multiple pedals.
